More than 1,100 special athletes across Maryland participated in the 2011 Special Olympics Maryland State Summer Games at Towson University from June 10-12. In total, 86 Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) students and alumni competed in four events: aquatics, track and field, bocce, and softball. The awards earned include the following:

Our very own, Anne Shipps, Past President of the PGCEC Chapter 263 and special education teacher at H. Winship Wheatley Early Childhood Center, took home a gold for swimming.Additionally, the Prince George's County Unified Softball Team, comprised of PGCPS alumni, took home the gold medal and are now state champions. Aquatics athlete Zachary Posten from Laurel High School will represent the United States from June 25 to July 4 during the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece.For more information on the Maryland Special Olympics, visit www.somd.org.
